Dave’s Florida Beach Week

Those of you anticipating Dave Warnock‘s Florida Beach Week, we have some more solid details! A home has been reserved in Santa Rosa Beach from Feb 15-22, 2020. The sleeping capacity is 20 (and 2 couches that look “meh”). We still need to hash out the details of how to register, but there’ll be a per/person/night cost, first come first serve. I haven’t done the numbers yet, but the cost won’t be terribly prohibitive, especially if we factor in proceeds from the WWDD sales. People can choose the days they want to stay; you aren’t expected to stay the whole week). Don’t hold me to this, but I’m estimating the per/night cost to be around $60. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me. If you want to be added to the “interest” contact list, please email me at daveslastride@gmail.com

“My Soul Has a Hat”

Last night, Cass and I (Marie) sat down with Dave to record an interview for the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast. During our conversation, Dave brought up this poem, entitled “My Soul Has a Hat” by Mário de Andrade:

I counted my years
& realized that I have
Less time to live by,
Than I have lived so far.

I feel like a child who won a pack of candies: at first he ate them with pleasure
But when he realized that there was little left, he began to taste them intensely.

I have no time for endless meetings
where the statutes, rules, procedures & internal regulations are discussed,
knowing that nothing will be done.

I no longer have the patience
To stand absurd people who,
despite their chronological age,
have not grown up.

My time is too short:
I want the essence,
my spirit is in a hurry.
I do not have much candy
In the package anymore.

I want to live next to humans,
very realistic people who know
How to laugh at their mistakes,
Who are not inflated by their own triumphs
& who take responsibility for their actions.
In this way, human dignity is defended
and we live in truth and honesty.

It is the essentials that make life useful.
I want to surround myself with people
who know how to touch the hearts of those whom hard strokes of life
have learned to grow with sweet touches of the soul.

Yes, I’m in a hurry.
I’m in a hurry to live with the intensity that only maturity can give.
I do not intend to waste any of the remaining desserts.

I am sure they will be exquisite,
much more than those eaten so far.
My goal is to reach the end satisfied
and at peace with my loved ones and my conscience.

We have two lives
& the second begins when you realize you only have one.

-Mário de Andrade

Moments of Humanity

Dave just texted me. “Can you call me?” In about 5 minutes I was going to head to the gym to workout but I love hearing what Dave is thinking about. So fuck the gym. Dave took an unplanned roadtrip from Nashville, TN to Asheville, NC this week. “It was cloudy in Nashville,” he complained to me. This morning, he was sitting in a park, enjoying a cigar. He noticed a group of girls from a private school, sitting down in groups with homeless people, having conversations. Dave approached one of the moms and asked what was going on. They explained that the school had partnered with a organization to partner the students with willing homeless individuals to talk about their experiences. How they came to be homeless. What’s it like? It was an opportunity for these privileged girls to gain empathy and to see the humanity in those who are homeless.

Dave shared that he found it so beautiful to behold. The humanity. As he was watching, he was listening to a song entitled “I Will Not Resign” by Greg Laswell (video & lyrics below this paragraph). The phrase “I will not resign” meant to Dave his friends’ commitment to him to go with him all the way and not resign. Not give up. Not let go. Live all the way through and support him to the end. Dave felt profoundly emotional as he sat there, thinking, of this “moment of human beings being human beings. It’s what makes life so precious. Humans being kind to one another, loving one another.”

Lyrics:

Pardon me
While I oversimplify
I’m not here to slight all your reasons why
I know you’re justified lingering in your pain
I’m not the first to say it
So I’ll whisper it here today

Keep your head up
Keep your head up along the way
Keep your head up
Never mind what you think it takes

I hear you asking, “What Now?”
Not sure that I know
But I miss the days I used to
And I miss your afterglow
It’s been a long farewell to yesterday
I won’t pretend to know how
We’re not defined by our choices
But our response to them now

So keep your head up
Keep your head up along the way
Keep your head up
Never mind what you think it takes

And of the never-ending goodbye
I’ll see you next Sunday
I’m not the first to say it
So allow me for my sake!

Keep your head up
Keep your head up along the way
Keep your head up
Never mind what you think it takes

I will not resign
I will not resign
I will not resign
I will not resign
I will not resign
I will not resign
I will not resign
